James Brown was born in 1953 and grew up in the Cambridgeshire village of Gamlingay. Now retired, he spent his working life as a freelance artist, illustrator, graphic designer and writer. He began learning to fly in 1984, and after gaining a Private Pilots' Licence flew light aircraft for fun until the money ran out 23 years later. His aviation paintings are in collections in this country, as well as in Europe, North America and Australasia. Many have been reproduced as book jackets, prints and greetings cards. He also designs aircraft colour schemes.Researching the story of Winifred Crossley united two of his lifelong passions, aviation and the history of his home village. He has six grown-up children and four grandchildren. He and his wife live in Suffolk. This is his fourth book.
