Fuggerei

In 1521 Jakob Fugger laid the foundation-stone for the existence of the Fuggerei in eternity, with a deed of foundation. Today, the Fuggerei still offers Augsburg citizens in need a safe home; descendants of Jakob Fugger still give their time to the management of the Foundation. To this day, the Foundation assets that Fugger contributed form the basis for funding the settlement.Taking a tour through the settlement, the guide explains how the Fuggerei has been able to fulfil its mission as a foundation for 500 years. The diverse contents of the houses are presented clearly and vividly – from architecture, to historical and contemporary life in the Fuggerei to the future of their foundation idea. Additionally, guest authors comment on interesting social and cultural-historical topics of the Fuggerei, discussing what the concept of the Fuggerei can mean for today’s society.
