Expert Systems in Process Control

Advances in artificial intelligence, smart process transmitters and positioners allied with the overwhelming use of computers in process control has led to the increasing application of expert systems in this field. The purpose of this book is to promote a more efficient use of computers in process control, by examining the essential concepts, methods and application of expert systems in process control. The cycle of expert system application in process control is addressed, from process data acquisition, presentation modelling, fuzzification, semantic evaluation, operator's interface, through to the operationalization of the concept by automatic learning and on-line algorithms for process control. Intended primarily as a reference for practising engineers and scientists in the process industries, this book also seeks to serve as a high-level text for students in process control engineering. A minimal undergraduate-level background is assumed and all theoretical considerations are explained through practical examples.
