Advances in materials science and engineering have paved the way for the development of new and more capable sensors. Drawing upon case studies from manufacturing and structural monitoring and involving chemical and long wave-length infrared sensors, this book suggests an approach that frames the relevant technical issues in such a way as to expedite the consideration of new and novel sensor materials. It enables a multidisciplinary approach for identifying opportunities and making realistic assessments of technical risk and could be used to guide relevant research and development in sensor technologies.Table of ContentsFRONT MATTEREXECUTIVE SUMMARYPART I: DEFINITIONS AND ISSUESCHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION TO SENSORSCHAPTER 2: INTERDISCIPLINARY STRATEGYPART II: MATERIALS FOR SENSORS--IDENTIFYING NEEDSCHAPTER 3: SELECTED SENSOR APPLICATIONS IN MANUFACTURINGCHAPTER 4: SELECTED SENSOR APPLICATIONS FOR STRUCTURAL MONITORING AND CONTROLCHAPTER 5: LWIR SENSORSCHAPTER 6: CHEMICAL SENSORSPART III: OPPORTUNITIES, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONSCHAPTER 7: SENSOR MATERIALS R&D OPPORTUNITIESCHAPTER 8: GENERAL CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONSAPPENDIX A: BIBLIOGRAPHY OF SENSOR TECHNOLOGYAPPENDIX B: SENSOR TECHNOLOGY GLOSSARY -- DEFINITIONS AND EXPLANATIONS . . .APPENDIX C: AN ILLUSTRATIVE SENSOR TAXONOMYAPPENDIX D: SENSOR TECHNOLOGY FOR MONITORING POLYMER CURINGAPPENDIX E: FIGURES OF MERIT FOR INFRARED PHOTODETECTORSAPPENDIX F: ACOUSTIC WAVE DEVICES FOR CHEMICAL SENSINGAPPENDIX G: CANDIDATE SENSOR TECHNOLOGIES FOR DETECTION OF CHEMICAL WEAPONS...APPENDIX H: BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES OF COMMITTEE MEMBERS
