The worldwide problem of restoring environments that have been blighted by industrial pollution is perhaps at its most challenging in Eastern Europe. Surface and groundwaters have been affected by inadequate waste control measures and accidents, leaving a legacy of contaminated sites that need urgent remediation and environments that must be protected from the deleterious side-effects of industrial development. Thus Ljubljana was chosen as the venue for a conference to address soil aquifer restoration issues, identify research needs for the development of effective remediation technology, and to cultivate information and technology transfer between industrial and developing countries. Thirty-one papers have been selected from those given as platform or poster presentations. In addition to four invited plenary lectures there are articles on water quality, remediation of in organic contaminants, bioremediation, industrial and municipal waste remediation, solid and hazardous waste management, and contaminant assessment and modelling. These proceedings will prove a valuable source of information for research scientists, civil and environmental engineers, administrators and policy-makers who are seeking ways to ameliorate the adverse impacts of industrial and economic development.
