In our increasingly multicultural global society, it has become important for practitioners to consider social and cultural factors when looking at the causes of, and treatments for, mental illness. The American Psychiatric Association recognized the role of culture in the recent DSM-IV. But the DSM-IV leaves practitioners wondering just how they should go about assessing those cultural factors.
