Dan Dietz was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at the University of Virginia. He is the author of Off-Broadway Musicals, 1910-2007: Casts, Credits, Songs, Critical Reception and Performance Data of More Than 1,800 Shows (2010), which was selected as one of the outstanding reference sources of 2011 by the American Library Association. With this book, Dietz continues his excellent set of companions to Broadway shows with coverage of the 312 book musicals that opened between January 1, 1910, through December 31, 1919, the decade that saw the rise of Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, and other icons. In contrast to the earlier volumes (all reviewed in these pages), this one includes—in addition to works by Kern, Berlin, et al.—plays with incidental songs and revue-like book musicals, revivals, and return engagements that received their New York premieres…Although Dietz relies heavily on critical commentaries and newspaper reviews, his additional highly subjective and often-amusing comments support thoughtful consideration not only of individual shows but also the whole decade.
