CAROLYN B. MATALENE is a professor in the English department at the University of South Carolina specializing in composition and rhetoric. Her research appears in Worlds of Writing, Professional Writing in Context, Telling Stories/Taking Risks, and numerous journals. She was the 1998 recipient of the University of South Carolina's Amoco Outstanding Teaching Award. KATHERINE C. REYNOLDS is an associate professor in the College of Education at the University of South Carolina, with teaching and research emphases in higher education history and policies. She is the author of Visions and Vanities: John Andrew Rice of Black Mountain College as well as numerous articles and chapters about the history and philosophy of education.
