Angelita has always lived a protected life in a small mountain village in Andalucia. On reaching adolescence, angered by hostile gossip about her father and restrictions on visiting him in Madrid, she commits a crime against the community she has grown up within. She is imprisoned, but escapes by killing a guard and flees the village. She then must undertake a dangerous journey, dressed as a boy, to find her way to Madrid and join her father. In Madrid, she joins a group of young people, including members of the International Brigade against Franco, to protest the killings and incarcerations of anyone opposed to the government. The denial of rights and justice for women are central to her cause. Using her gifts of poetry and song, she holds illicit performances throughout Madrid to bring to her cause those in power who are disillusioned by government. The risks are many. Survival depends on the trust of her friends, luck, and ultimately, love.
