Schalow has expanded the Historical Dictionary of Heidegger’s Philosophy (first edition, written by Alfred Denker, Dec'00, 38-1890) with the publication of the third edition—adding more 100 pages of new entries and addressing new works and scholarship published since the last edition (2010). In addition to the chronology of events and writings, the volume includes a more concise introduction, which orients readers without overwhelming them, allowing them to place the entries in context. Some 5,000 new books on Heidegger have been published since the last edition, clear evidence that the importance of Heidegger’s philosophy has only grown larger. His importance and relevance to current society and the US in particular makes this third edition salient for the modern scholar. Heidegger’s belief that history is “rediscovering and retrieving those influences in terms of their relevance for the future” (p. xi) is exactly why this revised version is so necessary.
