Rise of Urban Art

A splendid array of contemporary art treasures come to light in a collection formed since the late 1990s at the Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art (MUCA) in Munich, one of the most important collections of its kind. Once radical upstarts, the featured artists have grown into major figures on the international art scene, drawing on the urban landscape as a key part of their practice. This book presents the artists’ pioneering works in a striking, comprehensive display. Their art engages viewers directly, often making them part of the work – through the discourse around Banksy’s spectacular performance art, for instance, or by literally entering JR’s monumental photographic interventions. The present volume brings together the diverse stylistic strands of Urban Contemporary Art, opening up a complete panorama. With it, we celebrate a quarter-century of the MUCA story.
