Johnnie Shand Kydd is a British photographer and author renowned for his candid portraits of the Young British Artists and his documentary work. The youngest son of Peter Shand Kydd and Janet Munro Kerr, he studied art and English at Exeter University, later working as an art dealer before beginning his photographic career.His work is celebrated for capturing the emergence of artists such as Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst in the 1990s. Shand Kydd’s photographs have been exhibited at institutions including the National Portrait Gallery, Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, and Manchester’s Whitworth Gallery, Manchester. His previous titles include Spitfire Photographs from the Art World (1997), Crash (2006), and Siren City (2009). Hydra (2015), (Thames & Hudson, 1997), a portfolio centring on annual art-world gatherings on the Greek island of Hydra, has featured in exhibitions and has been published as a standalone book.
