Moore's moving autobiography tells the story of his life as a soldier, priest, bishop, and social activist. Moore served during World War II, and was decorated for valor. As suffragan bishop in Washington, D.C. in the 1960s, he was active in the struggle for civil rights and led protests against the Vietnam War. His seventeen years as bishop of New York brought the church into dialogue with the poor and oppressed and led him to work for human rights in South Africa, Nicaragua, and the Soviet Union.
