Organic Certification for Livelihoods Improvement

Certified-organic agriculture has been gaining lots of attention in the recent decades.The market for organic products has also increased as more consumers engage in organic products purchases.However,there are ongoing debates about the ability of certified-organic agriculture to improve the livelihoods of organic farmers' household. While the proponents of certified-organic agriculture are pointing the fact that it is the only sustainable option for livelihoods improvement of smallholders farmers in developing countries. The opponents of certified-organic agriculture argue that its structure and processes create challenges for livelihoods improvement. It is on this background that this book is written to shed more light on the contributions of certified-organic agriculture to the livelihoods of smallholders' farmers in developing countries. The book assesses the possibilities for development of organic agriculture sector and improvements of organic certification structures by evaluating the effects of organic certification on farmers. Hence it is relevant for and applies to everyone with an interest in organic agriculture and organic certification in a developmental context.
