The question of the image of the military has gained increasing interest since the beginning of the All-Volunteer Force in 1973. It is imperative that the military foster a positive image if it is to be successful in filling the ranks with qualified personnel. This thesis states that Americans have traditionally held negative perceptions about the armed forces and that many of these perceptions exist today. The problem is studied from 1750 to 1980 and an attempt is made to identify specific causes for the negative image. The factors which have influenced the development of a negative image include the question for the need of a standing military force, the quality of enlisted personnel, effects of peace movements, the military's participation in unpopular wars, antipathy toward West Point, and the armed forces' lack of preparedness for some conflicts. In the most recent years, studies and statistical data suggest that the present image continues less than favorable. The attitude of youth toward military service and the increasing alienation of military people from society are cited as specific causes for negative aspects of the military's image. Obviously, the initial step in solving any problem is the recognition of the problem itself. This study concludes by recommending additional study on the question of the image of the military and the formulation of a program to upgrade that image.
