The range of material is impressive; socio-economic issues are juxtaposed with environmental issues with specific reference to African countries and their unique contexts. At the same time the relationships between these countries and the wider world are explored. Scholars and students of Geography and Development as well as those in the Social and Environmental Sciences will find this book a valuable synopsis of the relationships between people and place in Africa. To the world outside, Africa appears to be headed down the tubes. But on the ground the picture of a dying continent is much less certain. Nobody doubts that humans are leaving imprints and that apparently stable ecosystems are threatened and biodiversity is shrinking. But looking through a country-by-country or village-by-village prism, the picture is not so simple. Africa’s landscapes and people are resilient.
