Xander's wildly jealous.  He loves Amanda every bit as much as Alex does.  He knows she's not his, and he knows he doesn't deserve her.  But maybe if he acts more like the man she loves, she'll notice him, too.

Amanda sees what he's doing.  She wishes he would stop pretending to be Alex and see that Xander has value, too.  If he keeps this up, he'll cease to exist.
