Basic Monitoring in Canine and Feline Emergency Patients

Dr. Thomovsky is a Clinical Professor of Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at Purdue University. Her clinical interests include emergent presentations of various diseases including urinary obstructions and diabetic ketoacidosis as well as acute management of post-operative cases. She helped to establish the ECC program as well as the residency training program at the University of Wisconsin in 2008 and then came to Purdue in 2011 where she originated the residency training program in the then-nascent ECC department. Both institutions continue to have robust emergency caseloads and successful residency programs. Dr. Thomovsky is also a speaker at the local, national, and international levels educating practitioners on a variety of topics related to emergency and critical care. Dr. Paula Johnson is a Clinical Associate Professor of Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at Purdue University. She gained her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the Louisiana State University College of Veterinary Medicine, undertook a Small Animal Medicine and Surgery Rotating Internship at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, and completed her Residency in Emergency and Critical Care at the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Veterinary Medicine.Her clinical interests include management of trauma and critical care cases, transfusion medicine and ventilation therapy. Dr. Johnson was instrumental in establishing the ECC service at Purdue and continues to support and nurture the program. Dr. Johnson has long had a passion for teaching and providing mentorship for students, interns, residents, and practitioners in general practice and emergency practice. She works to provide education and training on ECC related topics through various engagement activities. Dr. Brooks graduated from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2008. She completed a rotating small animal internship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and then practiced as an ER doctor at the Wisconsin Veterinary Referral Center in Waukesha, WI. Subsequently, she completed a residency at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine and became board certified in 2014. She is currently a clinical associate professor in small animal emergency/critical care at Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine and section head of the SAECC department at Purdue. Her interests include shock, trauma, point-of-care ultrasound, transfusion medicine, and vascular access.
