The cultural heritage sector spans many distinct sub-areas, which may be divided into two major classifications: tangible heritage, represented by the discovery, documentation, organisation, interpretation and communication of artefacts, monuments, sites, museums and collections (including digital archives, catalogues and libraries); and intangible heritage, represented by performance, stories, myth and mythology. At the interface between these two areas lies the area of historical and cultural interpretation. This collection contains the research presented at VAST 2007, the 8th International Symposium on Virtual Reality, Archaeology and Cultural Heritage, which will take place November 27-29, in Brighton, UK. The topics include those that advance the state-of-the-art either in potential computing science solutions, which are directly inspired by needs of the cultural heritage sector, or use the best of current computing science solutions in novel applications to cultural heritage challenges. The research incorporates data from real cultural heritage situations.
