Providing a thorough and comprehensive survey of the contemporary urban world that is accessible to students, Urban People and Places: The Sociology of Cities, Suburbs, and Towns will give balanced treatment to both the process by which cities are built (i.e., urbanization) and the ways of life practiced by people that live and work in more urban places (i.e., urbanism) unlike most core texts in this area. Whereas most texts focus on the socio-economic causes of urbanization, this text analyses the cultural component: how the physical construction of places is, in part, a product of cultural beliefs, ideas, and practices and also how the culture of those who live, work, and play in various places is shaped, structured, and controlled by the built environment. Inasmuch as the primary focus will be on the United States, global discussion is composed with an eye toward showing how U.S. cities, suburbs, and towns are different and alike from their counterparts in Africa, Asia, and Central and South America

Daniel J. Monti, Jr. is Professor of Public Policy and Urban Affairs at Saint Louis University. A graduate of Oberlin College and the University of North Carolina, he is a former Woodrow Wilson Fellow and has written extensively on matters of urban affairs, race and ethnic relations, American civic life, inner-city redevelopment, and youth gangs. He has been involved in an ongoing study of civic culture as it is expressed in cities across the United States and around the world. His books include Engaging Strangers: Civil Rites, Civic Capitalism, and Public Order in Boston (Fairleigh Dickinson University, 2013),The American City: A Social and Cultural History (Blackwell, 1999), Wannabe: Gangs in Suburbs and Schools (Blackwell, 1994), and Race, Redevelopment, and the New Company Town (SUNY Press, 1990).Michael Ian Borer is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He is author of Faithful to Fenway: Believing in Boston, Baseball, and America’s Most Beloved Ballpark (NYU Press 2008) and Vegas Brews: Craft Beer and the Birth of a Local Scene (NYU Press 2019). He also co-authored Urban People and Places: The Sociology of Cities, Suburbs, and Towns (SAGE 2014) and Sociology in Everyday Life (Waveland 2016). Borer served as the 2021-2022 President of the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction. Lyn C. Macgregor received her undergraduate degree at Boston University and a doctorate in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is currently the Associate Director of the Robert F. and Jean E. Holtz Center for Science at Technology Studies there. She specializes in the sociology of culture, communities, and consumption, with a focus on the building of social ties and social networks. She is the author of Habits of the Heartland (2010).
