And the sight of her mother, Mrs. Bertha Mae-sitting in her rocking chair this morning-broke her heart. If this was really what she wanted; Flossie Mae wondered why her heart was so heavy. Singing job or not; Flossie Mae intended to make Augustus Atwater pay for making her wait-pay for all of his empty promises, his many excuses and for his mouth always being full of sweet talk. She hoped the City would be all that he had claimed. But she would see- Yes, she would see. Instead, I've been lost in the jungle-with the wolves on my trail!"
