After a violent pogrom devastates a small Jewish community in rural Ukraine, the surviving two siblings of a broken family make a choice- one will stay to rebuild, the other will leave for a new beginning in America.

Two decades later, Mulya Guttenstein enjoys a simple childhood in Berizky, Ukraine. An ocean away, his cousin, Frank Edelman, is surrounded by the noise and bustle of the city of Philadelphia. As the world turns to war, Frank and his family face anti-semitism in the city streets and the call of the military, while Mulya and his family must prepare for the Nazis mobilizing on the Ukrainian border.

Through it all, the question remains: Can this shattered family ever be made whole again?
