The English Heritage Directory of Building Sands and Aggregates

The National Library of Mortar Sands was set up in 1993 to enable historic mortars on English Heritage sites to be matched effectively with sands that are currently available. The library consists of more than 500 samples of sand and aggregates collated from a comprehensive list of suppliers. This directory includes details of the sands and aggregates in the form of data sheets that have been categorized by country, by colour and by supplier in an easily accessible form. Each data sheet features the regional origin, the quarry and the sand name used by the quarry. The colour of each sample is determined using the Munsell colour charts. A wallchart highlighting the different colours and grades of aggregates is also available.
