'Comprehensive, thoughtful and provoking. This book provides a thorough overview of the humanities ... extremely useful for students wanting to know how the subjects can complement each other in an uncertain curriculum environment.'

Anthony Barlow, Senior Lecturer in Primary Geography Education, University of Roehampton, UK

This book provides clear guidance on planning, teaching and assessing the humanities from the Early Years to Key Stage 2. Through a blend of theory and real-life examples, Grigg and Hughes demonstrate the contribution that history, geography and religious education can make to enhancing childrens thinking, literacy, numeracy and ICT skills.

The book includes:

  • Up-to-date research briefings providing quick access to expert opinions on a range of topics, from childrens understanding of the world to cross-curricular approaches

  • Tips on how to make the most of personal and family history, the local area, and current affairs to show children the immediacy of the humanities

  • Directed tasks to extend the reader's knowledge and understanding

  • Reflection points to allow the reader to pause and consider the implications of what is being discussed in their own practice

Whether you are a trainee or a practitioner, this book will develop your knowledge of how young childrens understanding of place, time and community can be fostered through a play-based curriculum. It will also benefit teachers of older children looking to encourage more independent learning in their schools.
