Taking the Stars

Kaphri's Birthstar, Freya, gives her power, but it never responds to her-not in the way she sees other Birthstars fill the Ly Kai men around her with fleeting joy and contentment. Then one night it finally happens. Fire lances along her bones and she is flooded with ecstasy. Until she realizes the responding star is not Freya, but Arylla, the great star that fueled the betrayal stranding her and the other Ly Kai on this alien world. Terrified she is destined for evil, she vows never to use her star power again, and, with her tiny dragon companion Gemma, flees the sanctuary of Kryie Karth.

But the Ly Kai do not belong on this world, and though she doesn't know they even exist, its inhabitants are seeking revenge on the people who invaded and stole their lands.

Giving up her only means of defense might not be Kaphri's best move right now.
