A harshening climate and increased strife make for a difficult life on North Island, while the future of all Albrimir seems uncertain. Technology improves slowly, spiritual beliefs stagnate, and Seers adapt as best they can. For the first time, though, the Master of Cosmic Dust - director of energy and creation itself, known to many peoples by many names - has issued instructions. Those touched by his mysterious Call must seek out the huntress Skadi from the distant wilderness, and convene with her in Meniya, the ancient temple of an abandoned civilization.

If it succeeds, such a reunion will herald a new energy for the planet and bring it out of stupor. If it fails, Albrimir may fall victim to a tyrant's yoke. Chances of success seem low, for while Skadi befriends wolves and other wild creatures of Utgard, she is not one to lend herself voluntarily to places of civilization.

The Gorrlanders place their hopes in Kolfinna, a young Communicator with a unique gift. She is able to use the Dust itself to communicate in thought, vision and feeling to all those reached by Sigfather -the name Gorrlanders give the Dust Master. Believing Kolfinna able to convene with Skadi, they send her across tundra and taiga to set this unprecedented meeting, accompanied by her partner, the Guide Mikkjal. Their physical and astral journey will involve snowmobiles, radios, Dust communication, and visions, and will reveal many things. They will find the identity of the tyrant, and the nature of his plot for war, but will see that not everyone they meet is on Kolfinna's side. Perhaps Kolfinna herself is not quite be the person she thinks she is...
