A retired seaman, abandoned in childhood, raised in an orphanage, and taught by strict teachers, finds release by escaping and joining the Army in WWII as a teenager. He enters the Korean War and finally finds momentary peace in a modest house in Key West with his Cuban wife and twin children, a boy and a girl. His son, sympathetic to the fact that his childhood friend was killed during the Vietnam War, joins the Marines and is killed in the Tet Offensive. His sister becomes morose and goes to sea in pre-frontal weather in their sailing boat, a birthday present from their parents, and drowns in a storm. Following this, the seaman's wife succumbs to a heart attack. The distracted husband goes to sea, spots a dog on a raft, and fights a shark to save the canine, which results in a resolution that restores his faith in himself and life.
