In 1937, fifteen year-old Eva Luft was sent by her parents to Paris to escape Nazi Germany. In this book, she writes about her years in France, including the start of the war and her internment and escape from a camp in Southern France. Her troubles increased with the German occupation, forcing her to live underground with forged papers and a false identity. She found help from nuns who hid her in a convent. She later became part-owner of a bar frequented by the German Gestapo and SS. Knowing that at any time she could be arrested and deported, she persevered, surviving until her liberation by the American army and her eventual reunion with the surviving members of her family in Sweden.
