Productive and Liveable Cities

This study offers guidelines for pedestrian and bicycle traffic in African cities. The text is based on the combination of studies and test findings obtained in pilot projects carried out in Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Eldoret and Morogoro between 1995 and 2000, as part of the World Bank Sub-Saharan Africa Transport Program (SSATP, urban component), financed by the Dutch Ministry of Development Co-operation (DGIS). It is also based on the joint professional knowledge of the authors and the other members of the co-operating teams that carried out these pilot projects. Version 1.3 documents best knowledge and practice and time of publication. It is hoped that an increasing body of practical experience in Africa with successfully implemented urban pedestrian and bicycle transport policies will enable the production of Version 2 within a couple of years.
