Well-known German and Italian experts on Petrarca and humanism discuss in this volume one of the most important figures of European intellectual history. Because of the breadth and depth of his collected works, Petrarca (1304-1374) is held to be the founder of humanism and a major precursor of the Renaissance. One main focus of this book are in-depth analyses of Petrarca's most famous work Canzoniere. It becomes clear that Petrarca's thoughts on themes such as introspection and self-awareness as well as on the alienation and dialectics of I and Thou were significantly responsible for the development of modern consciousness. Other contributions focus on Petrarca's influence on subsequent generations of poets from the Renaissance to the 20th century.
