Ocimum gratissimum Linn is an herbaceous plant belonging to the Labiatae family. It is an indigenous to tropical areas including India and West Africa. In Nigeria, the plant is called "Efirin-nla" by the Yoruba speaking tribe, Igbos called it "Ahuji" while the Hausas called it "Doidoya". O.gratissimum has been used extensively in traditional system of medicine in many countries including Nigeria. In the coastal areas of Nigeria, the plant is used in the treatment of high fever, cold, catarrh, diarrhea and dysentery. The Ibos used it in management of baby's cord to keep the wound surfaces sterile. It is also used in the treatment of fungal infections. The leaves are rubbed between palms and sniffed as a treatment for blocked nostril and control of nose bleeding. This report book emphasizes the phytochemistry as well as the traditional use and clinical potentials of Ocimum gratissimum Linn. Hoping that this book will attract the attention of natural products researchers interested in validating the hidden truth which has not been scientifically validated.
