why bother to keep a diary about it?
Well, of course it is not necessary at all to keep a BDSM journal. But if you want to increase your level. Then keeping a BDSM journal is essential. Using this journal you both can see where your journey goes to and if the direction is right.
Write about your feelings in advance of each session and
afterwards about what you experienced. Did you dare to do something "crazy"?
Then record it!
Likewise, you make it more tangible for you, if something's going wrong, but can't name it clearly in a conversation with your partner.
