Making a Difference

Many Americans love the underdog. They enjoy watching their favorite contestant, athlete or team overcome insurmountable odds to achieve goals never thought possible. The David and Goliath scenario captivates them, perhaps in part because they can relate to the smaller, weaker character. Maybe it is the element of human struggle against larger foes such as society or poverty. Such is the case with the incredible story of Paul Wesley Airey--a humble gentleman who grew up through the Great Depression, quit high school to join the military, spent time as a POW during World War II, and rose up to become the first Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force. His rags-to-riches story is not of monetary value, but rich with many valuable leadership lessons and lasting impressions that made a difference still echoing in today's United States Air Force.
