This study explores the intellectual context and philosophical methodology behind the work of the Sicyonian school of painting which flourished in the 4th century BC. It analyses Plato's opposition to the school and its attempts to provide a scientific and mathematical basis for art, and discusses the similarity of the ideas of the school and its painters and teachers with those of Aristotle.
