The Inca Atahualpa, Lord of the Beginning, has been captured by bearded invaders who have arrived in Cajamarca mounted on giant llamas and armed with deadly metal cylinders inhabited by Illapa, the god of Thunder and Lightning. The World of the Four Directions is in mortal peril.

The mission to rescue the Inca falls to Salango, Counter-at-a-Glance, weaver of quipus and our protagonist, a Chanca spy from the Inca’s secret service. 

Over a thousand pages, we not only see this task unfold, but we also witness the meticulous reconstruction of the Inca civilization, where loyalties collide and greed, betrayal, and the ambition for power abound.
