Education in Song of Passion and Worship

Music has a wide circulation in the Jorasanko Tagore family. Rabindranath's father Debendranath Tagore and other elder brothers of Rabindranath used to practice music regularly. At a young age, his new elder brotherJyotirindranath Tagore had the greatest influence on Rabindranath's music education. The song 'Gaganer the Ravi Chandra Deepak Jwale' written at the age of eleven was probably the first song composed by Rabindranath. After that almost 70 years he composed songs regularly. Apart from self-composed lyric poems, he tuned some Vedic hymns, Buddhist spells and composed some songs by Vidyapati, Gobindadas, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, Satyendranath Tagore, AkshayKumar Baral, Sukumar Roy, and Hemlata Devi. The last song he wrote was - "O new sight once more."
