The digestive enzymes in the gut of Labeo calbasu of Chatla swamp, South Assam was investigated with respect to activity levels. The study was particularly confined to see the activity level of amylase and trypsin. The result showed that all the enzymes were present at varying levels in the three gut regions namely, foregut, midgut and hindgut. The omnivore Labeo calbasu is one of the most abundant carp in freshwater and brackish water and commercially important for both fisheries and aquaculture purpose. These are stomachless species. The result obtained from this study shows that Labeo calbasu is well equipped with the enzymes amylase and trypsin to digest its food items. High enzyme activity in the anterior part shows that proper digestion of food occurs here whereas low enzyme activity in the posterior region suggests storage of undigested materials or wastes before they are eliminated from the body. For more detail characterization of enzyme activities Native-PAGE had been carried out.
