It's been sixty-five years since ten-year-old pageant star Gretel Sylvester disappeared, but Cookie Marquez says this is gonna be the year she finally solves the mystery. She also claims there are ghosts in her grandma's radio and she got kicked out of Girl Scouts because she thought she saw Mothman. Cookie Marquez says a lot of things, and-as she and her skeptical older sister Rainy discover one fateful train ride later-not all of them are wrong. In a mediocre wonderland not so different from the Americana they left behind, the sisters dodge disillusioned children, navigate disappointing adults, and learn that the truth is no open-and-shut case.
