An Introduction to English Syntax

This book is based on Chomsky's generative grammar developed specically within the P&P Framework. It is clearly organized and easily accessible providing the readers with the basic tools and essential requirements to easily understand syntax and syntactic analysis. It also introduces students to the study of language starting with human knowledge of language and language acquisition, walking them through words, constituency, constituent structure, PSRs and ending in X-bar Theory, providing them with examples from different languages and of different nature and typology, viz. those belonging to Semitic, Indo-European, Siouan, Austronesian language families, etc. The book is, hopefully, a basic introduction to the study of syntax. It is, however, a fundamental course for undergraduate students, and could be of some value to those students embarking on courses devoted to the study of syntax in postgraduate levels and to those students of other disciplines like cognitive science and computational linguistics and those who have interest in the study of language in general through the linguistic phenomena involved and the different languages made use of exemplifying such phenomena.
