The Altai people are an indigenous ethnic group of the Altai Mountains, in the very center of Asia. The Altai language belongs to the Kipchak group of the central Turkic language family. The closest languages to Altai are Kyrgyz and Karachay-Balkar. Altai is the second official language of the Altai Republic of the Russian Federation. According to the last census, there are about 90,000 native speakers of Altai.  The Altai literature has rich folklore and written traditions. Four periods of its development include Old Turkic (6th–12th centuries), Turkic-Mongolian (13th–18th centuries), the literature of the late 19th–early 20th centuries; and the modern period (20th–21st centuries). Numerous books have been translated to Altai from the Russian language and the other languages of the USSR, including children literature. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by the great English writer Lewis Carroll, translated into Altai language ( / Kaykaldñ Cerinde Alisala bolgon uçuraldar), represents another serious step for the Altai literature.
